Cluster DevelopmentPorter in 1998 defined clusters as "geographic concentrations of interconnected companies, specialised suppliers, service providers, firms in related industries, and associated institutions (for example universities, standards agencies, and trade associations) in particular fields that compete but also co-operate."
Clustering can bring a wide range of benefits to both business and the wider economy. These include increased levels of expertise and expanded networks and allows for the potential of inter-firm learning and co-operation. Links with other industry bodies and service providers is an important spin-off from the establishment of any cluster.
Enterprising Manukau investigated the need for a cluster of companies involved in the logistics industry in Manukau, with the aim of improving the overall performance of this sector. The Northern Logistics Cluster was established and, through collaboration, leading local companies’ issues such as industry training, infrastructure and business networking have been addressed.
Many clusters start off as a network, sharing know-how and access to information. Clusters are ecosystems, living organisms relying on interest-based cooperation, and are spawned over time. They are different to hard and soft networks. (Elisabeth Waelbroek-Rocha).
